KU Leuven, Mecha(tro)nic System Dynamics (LMSD) research group (KU Leuven)

Location: Leuven, Belgium
Role: Beneficiary – Research and Technology Organisation

KU Leuven is a research-intensive and internationally-oriented university, performing both fundamental and applied scientific research. KU Leuven was founded in 1425 and now is one of Europe’s oldest universities.

Within the PLIADES project, KU Leuven is represented by its Mecha(tro)nic System Dynamics (LMSD) research group. LMSD’s objective is to add value to mecha(tro)nic systems in every phase of their lifecycle (from design to manufacturing and operations) by understanding, monitoring, and controlling their dynamic behavior, including motion, vibration, and acoustics. The research at LMSD covers a wide spectrum, including methodologies, theoretical foundations, and various application domains.

The LMSD research group strives for international leadership in engineering dynamics through excellent research, education and services, leveraging five decades of expertise, and placing a central focus on the Digital Twin concept in its roadmap. Dynamic behavior models, validated and enriched with dynamic measurement data, enable a continuously updated virtual replica of structures or systems.

Partner role in the PLIADES project:

In PLIADES, KU Leuven LMSD will create and filter multimodal data stemming from sensors in smart and autonomous vehicles. These data will be used to estimate relevant parameters that describe the vehicle dynamics and to be able to perform condition monitoring of the vehicle using state-estimators and machine learning techniques. Additionally, LMSD will look into efficient data management between the vehicle and the cloud, taking into account what types of identification are possible with edge computing and what types of identification are more suitable on the cloud. Finally, since the cloud data possibly contain user sensitive information, LMSD will look into ways of processing these data, while preserving the privacy of the vehicle user, such as the location of the vehicle.
